Silverstone Classic Touring Cars

Over 40 classic touring cars will be at Silverstone from 20 to 22 July 2012 for the Silverstone Classic.

Cars from the seventies to the nineties will be racing against one another.

At the moment the organisers have received 41 registration forms from competitors with ten makes of car and eighteen models to race. Racing drivers will take part in the Fuji film Classic Touring Car Trophy at what will be the world’s largest classic festival of motor racing.

Some of the entries include turbo charged Ford Sierra RS500s that were the dominant domestic force in racing touring cars until the naturally aspirated regulations came into being in 1990. There are at least 16 Super Touring cars taking part many of them having been designed and raced by F1 teams.

To add to what will be a great occasion there will also be a number of classic touring cars that were seen competing in World and European Touring Car Championships and the German DTM. Included will be the V12 Jaguar XJC Coupe and Jaguar XJ-S that were big favourites of the crowd in the days of the RAC Tourist Trophy that also took place at Silverstone racetrack.

Silverstone is to host a classic touring car eventOther cars include Vauxhall Vectra, Belmont and Cavalier, Nissan Primera, Mazda 323F, Talbot Sunbeam, Honda Accord, Alfa Romeo 156, Audi 80, Audi A4, Ford Capri, Escort, Mondeo and Sierra and BMW 635 and M3.

Frank Wrathall who is currently a star of the British Touring Car Championship will be driving a 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier. He said: “I grew up watching the super tourers in the Nineties on TV. They had a real cult following so to finally get the chance to race one is a bit of a ‘pinch yourself’ moment.

“Hopefully I can be competitive but there are many other very well maintained cars, particularly the Nissan Primeras and Ford Mondeo and even one of the mighty Audi A4s. Nor would I rule out a well driven M3 or RS500. It is going to be quite a race to be in!”

So, get yourself down there and enjoy a wonderful two days of classic touring car racing.
