You may be surprised to read that, according to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), there have been more than 100,000 motorists who have had his or her vehicle taken off them because they have not bothered to arrange motor insurance on the vehicle. A third of those motorists will never see their vehicles again because they have been crushed.

Hopefully, you will know that it is a legal requirement that your classic car is insured for a minimum of third party cover unless it is both kept off the public highway and has been declared SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).

So, which areas of the UK are renowned for having the most numbers of uninsured drivers? Well, below are the top 6 areas including postcodes that can lay claim to this unwanted statistic: –

1. Leeds LS1
2. Bristol BS1
3. Salford M3
4. Manchester M8
5. Birmingham B10
6. Birmingham B6

As you can see, Leeds LSI has more uninsured drivers than anywhere else in the UK. For the first time in excess of 10 years, Birmingham is no longer at the top of the table but 4 Birmingham postcodes feature in the top 15 – B10, B18, B6 and B11

Another worrying statistic revealed by the MIB is that a person is hit in the UK by a hit and run driver or uninsured driver every 20 minutes.

Did you know that, on average, motor insurance policyholders are charged an extra £53 per annum because of uninsured motorists? That is a significant amount of money and something that in the current economic climate people could do without having to find.

It is worth noting that if you are caught with an uninsured car you could be fined £300, have 6 points added to your license and your car could be seized and crushed. You could also end up in court and be banned from driving and have an unlimited fine.

So, do make sure that your classic car is insured.
