If you attended the “Autumn Classic” car racing at Castle Combe in Wiltshire last Saturday, you may have witnessed what could have been one of the most expensive car smashes of all time. The particular vehicle in question was an Aston Martin DBR1 that has previously been driven by no less than the famous racing driver Sir Stirling Moss.

A vintage Aston Martin DBR1 was seriously damaged at a classic car racing event at Castle Combe.

The classic Aston Martin DBR1 that was damaged at a recent racing event.

The Aston Martin dating back to 1957 that is currently owned by Adrian Beecroft is estimated to be worth in the region of £20 million and was involved in a collision with an Austin Healey 100 and a Jaguar XK120. It is estimated that several hundred thousands pounds worth of damage was caused to the vehicle. Fortunately, the car is repairable and nobody was injured in the accident. The organisers of the race decided to call the race off.

Back in 1959 the classic Aston Martin came second at Le Mans so it certainly has an excellent racing pedigree. Let us hope that the vehicle is quickly restored to its former glory and that we see it again on the racing track at some point in the future. Owners of such expensive vintage cars are to be commended for agreeing that they can be raced in the full knowledge that an unfortunate accident like this could happen.

This also shows the importance of making sure that if you are the proud owner of a classic car, whether it is worth £20 million or £20,000 that it is suitably insured. The cost of repairing a classic vehicle can be substantial and it is vital that appropriate classic car insurance is in place to cover the majority of any repair bill. There are numerous providers of such insurance so it would be a sensible idea to get a number of comparative quotes through the likes of us to try to get a great deal.
