Once every three months the Confused.com Car Insurance Price index is produced for as many people as that want to can read about what is happening to the cost of insuring a car. Whilst there is no guarantee of this it is quite possible that the cost of insuring a classic car also changes periodically.

There are a variety of reasons why the average cost of car insurance varies. For example, the make and model of a vehicle has a bearing upon the premium charged. For instance, expect to pay more to insure a high performance Porsche than say a 1 litre Ford car. The former is, on average, more likely to be stolen due to its value than more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident due to its rapid acceleration from 0 to 60mph than a less expensive and more sedate I litre Ford. Where you live impacts the premium as does how many miles you drive in your car each year as well as things like the age of a driver.

According to the above index, the average premium for fully comprehensive car insurance in the 2nd quarter of 2026 amounted to £719 per annum with this being a drop of £38 per annum when compared with a year ago. However, in the last 3 months premiums have increased by an average of £8 per annum.

Interestingly, this is the first quarterly rise since about peeking at an average of £995 per annum I the 4th quarter of 2023 – around 2 and ½ years ago. It is to be hoped that we do not see this rise in premiums continue upwards especially in the current financial climate here in the UK.

The age of the driver plays a part in how much a car insurance company charges with the younger motorist being more likely to pay more than an older motorist. For instance, someone aged 17 to 20 pays an average of £1,813 per annum, a driver aged 40 to 49 an average of £699 per annum and a motorist aged 60 to 69 an average of £459 per annum. As you can see, on average, there is a huge difference in average premiums between the young and more mature driver.

If you live in Inner London premiums average £1,088 per annum whereas in Manchester/Merseyside the average cost of car insurance is £807 per annum. The least expensive region is the South West with premiums averaging £504 per annum.
