Many of you of, shall we say, a certain age will be very familiar with the rock star Freddie Mercury who was the lead singer for the world famous band called Queen who had many successful records quite some years ago. Regrettably, he passed away at the age of only 45.

Anyway, he bought a 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow in 1979 for his own use although it is unlikely he drove the car as apparently he did not have a full UK driving license so he would have been chauffeured around in the luxury vehicle. The car was retained by Freddie Mercury until his early death in 1991. It was then driven by his sister who purchased the vehicle from his estate in 2003. The car was then sold in 2013.

At an RM Sotheby’s auction on the 5th November 2022 the classic saloon car was sold for £286,250 with this sum apparently far exceeding the price one would normally expect to get for such a vehicle. Presumably, the reason why it was sold at auction for such a huge sum of money was because of having once been owned by Freddie Mercury.

The classic car has a V8 6.750cc engine and its bodywork is in Silver Chalice over blue. From the numerous pictures on the auctioneer’s website the vehicle appeared to be in good condition.

You may be interested to read that the proceeds of the vehicle sale were to go to a charity called Superhuman Center that was set up to provide Ukraine with aid. Many of you will no doubt agree this sounds like a worthwhile cause.

It will be interesting to see if the new owner makes full use of the car and takes the classic car out on the road in due course or if it has been purchased for investment purposes. Hopefully, the new owner has arranged suitable classic car insurance to provide cover for an extremely valuable vehicle.
