Many of you that own a classic car are quite likely to also drive around on a daily basis in a standard family saloon, hatchback or 4 x 4. Therefore, it will probably interest you to read that in the 3rd quarter of 2026 car insurance premiums reduced by a few pounds.
According to the Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index, the average amount paid for fully comprehensive car insurance in the UK amounted to £713 per annum. In the previous quarter, premiums averaged £719 per annum – only a £6 per annum reduction but any drop in the current economic climate has got to be welcomed.
Whilst the index relates to ordinary car insurance, wouldn’t it be great if the amount paid for classic car insurance has also fallen.
In the 3rd quarter of 2025, premiums averaged £734 per annum for car insurance. In the 4th quarter of 2025, premiums averaged £726 per annum. In the 1st quarter of 2026 premiums averaged £711 per annum.
There are a variety of factors that impact how much an insurance company charges to insure your car such as your claims history, the make and model of the vehicle, what level of cover you require, how many miles per annum you drive your car in a year, do you wish to include any optional extras such as legal or breakdown cover, your age and where you live.
For example, if we look at the age of a driver, it tends, on average, to cost more to insure someone who is young and inexperienced when it comes to getting behind the wheel of a car. For instance, premiums average £1,860 per annum for those aged between 17 to 20 whereas for those aged between 60 to 69 premiums average £457 per annum. As you can see, that is a very big difference.
On average, drivers living in Wales – Central & North region, pay £517 per annum with this being the lowest premium paid. Compare that with those motorists residing in Inner London paying an average of £1,079 per annum – the most expensive region in the UK.
