There will be a number of classic car owners who like to take their cherished vehicle out on most weekends throughout the year including the winter months. However, there will be quite a lot of people who prefer to store their classic car during the winter. So, if you are in the second category, what should you consider doing to ensure your car is kept in good condition during this period?

Where you store your classic car is very important. Ideally, you should do so in a garage as this will hopefully keep it away from most of the potential harmful elements such as rain, snow and wind. However, if you do not have your own garage then you might like to consider taking it to a fully enclosed storage facility within reasonable travelling distance of your home. If neither of these are an option then the next best thing would be to store it on your drive but failing that on the street under a light outside your home but that last option is more risky in terms of the car being stolen or damaged by a passing car.

Consider using a breathable cover to help protect it against the elements of the winter weather.

Make sure that al the windows are closed.

Prior to doing this make sure that your classic car is thoroughly cleaned and polished to provide extra protection against dirt etc. Thoroughly clean out your classic car inside making sure no food items are left inside the vehicle to go mouldy.

Your fuel tank should be filled up and make sure you place a fuel additive in it. Do an oil change. Check brake and coolant fluids.

Take the hand brake off, put it in a suitable gear and make sure the classic car is chocked. Move the vehicle every few weeks to reduce the possibility of damage to your tyres.

Lubricate all relevant parts of your classic car and are suitably treated to help reduce the possibility of things perishing.

Depending upon where your classic car is stored you may wish to declare it SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and change your classic car insurance to Laid-Up Cover.

Whilst the above list is not exhaustive, we do hope that the tips prove to be of use to you in storing your classic car in the winter months.
